Chlorine in water supply draws complaints

In response to calls received concerning the smell of chlorine in the Braidwood water supply, city administrator Tony Altiery said the water is safe to drink.
“We are really good on the numbers here in Braidwood,” Altiery said. “Braidwood’s chlorine level is .8 which is in an acceptable range. Coal City’s chlorine level is .7, and in Wilmington it was up and down. I want to make the community aware that we are within range of all the other communities. ”

There was a bone-chilling wind on Saturday but that didn’t stop the heart-warming ceremony put on by Zachary Pruss, a runner with the national Running 4 Heroes campaign.
The Reed-Custer freshman led a one-mile run down Main Street in Braidwood in honor of Illinois State Trooper Corey Thompsen who died in the line of duty on Oct. 18, 2024, when his State Police motorcycle was hit by a truck while on patrol in Champaign County.

Custer Park teen Zachary Pruss will log his 28th mile as a runner for the national Running4Heroes campaign to honor first responder killed in the line of duty at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, along Main Street in Braidwood.
Pruss will be running one mile for Illinois State Trooper Corey Thompsen, 28, who was working a traffic enforcement detail on his state police motorcycle Oct. 18 in Champaign County when he was killed after being hit by a truck.

‘Shop with a Cop’ brings lots of smiles

Braidwood’s finest made Christmas brighter for local children and their families.
On Thursday, Dec. 5, 14 children joined the police department in Braidwood’s annual Shop with a Cop event. The celebration began in the most delicious way possible, with pizza provided by Rosati’s of Braidwood. The children, officers, volunteers, and guests fueled up with the shopping extravaganza awaiting them.

Large outbuilding destroyed by fire

Heavy black smoke from a “barn fire” in Wilmington could be seen in Braidwood Sunday as firefighters from several departments spent six hours controlling and extinguishing the blaze.
It happened around 3 p.m. Sunday when the Wilmington Fire Protection District was called to 22838 Stripmine Rd for a reported structure fire. Based on dispatch information received, a Full Still level response for mutual aid was requested while enroute to the scene.

Vote on solar farm postponed again

Though dozens of landowners anticipated a decision on a 3,600-acre solar farm in Custer and Reed townships, the Will County Board voted to table the issue until Feb. 20, 2025.
At its Nov. 21 meeting, board members voted 12-8 to once again delay a decision on the solar energy facility proposed by ACCIONA Energia, headquartered in Spain.

RCHS Industrial Arts makes big impression with other schools

It was a busy Tuesday at Reed-Custer High School and Mark Smith, the school’s Industrial Arts teacher, was everywhere at once. Smith reigns over the AutoCad and 3D printer lab, guitar workshop, and woodworking shop. In his world, there is no such thing as a slow day.
His students and coworkers refer to Smith affectionately as “Chief,” and it appears he has earned the moniker.
