Yard waste pickup resumes

Spring’s arrival brings changes in the way local residents can discard of their yard waste.

This is the first week Coal City residents can use their yard waste containers, the one with the light green lid.

Yard waste service is provided to the village each week between April 1 and the first week of December. The carts should be set out with trash and recycling carts on your designated collection day: Thursday for those south of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail crossing and Friday for those to the north of the crossing.

Items that can be placed in the containers include grass trimmings, leaves, twigs, branches, outdoor plants and flowers. Items that can not go in the yard cart include plastic bags, cardboard, concrete, rock, fruits and vegetables, dirt, stone, indoor plants, trees, stumps larger than 3 inches and animal waste.

In addition to the cart, the waste hauler will also collect yard waste placed at the curb in biodegradable kraft bags.

The burning of yard waste is no longer an option. The town’s guidelines for burning vegetative debris is limited to December 1 to April 1. Residents who violate the town code could be cited with an ordinance violation and fine.
