Unit 1 teachers are Stars

Some might say teachers in the Unit 1 School District are out of this world, and when it comes to lighting up education there are a few that shine bright among their peers.
In recognition of all they do for their students and the school community, five district teachers—one from each educational facility—were selected as Star Teachers, by their colleagues.
The new program was established by the Coal City Community Unit Education Association—the local teachers union—to highlight the outstanding work of its members.

Coal City seeking $633,000 to repair homes

The village of Coal City is seeking funds to help at least a dozen homeowners update their property.
A program offered by the Illinois Housing Development Authority [IHDA] provides funds for low income homeowners to help cover the cost of repairs based on health, safety, energy efficiency and accessibility.

5K supports breast cancer fighters, survivors

The 13th annual TaTa Trot steps off from Carbon Hill Park Sunday morning with dozens of runners and walkers coming together to support a great cause—breast cancer awareness, support and prevention.
The Oct. 9 event will raise funds for the Riverside Cancer Institute through support of the Riverside Medical Cancer Foundation.
Each year, TaTa Trot organizers work to generate funds through the 5K run/walk and other fundraising events to support the work taking place at the medical center.

Property annexations back on track

A petition to annex industrial property located on the town’s southern border has been received by the village of Coal City.
The process of annexing the land at 2390 S. Broadway—located on the east side of the road and just south of Reed Road— started back in September 2020.

Lady Coalers give Wilmington the boot

The Lady Coaler volleyball team faced the Lady Wildcats for the third time this season and won once again 21-25, 27-25, 25-16.
Coal City won at two of the three levels with the varsity and freshmen claiming victories on Thursday.
The varsity Lady Coalers improve their overall record to 18-7 and 8-1 in ICE conference.
The JV lost a close game 24-26, 17-25 while the Coal City freshmen won 25-23, 25-11.
At Peotone
The Varsity Lady Coalers beat Peotone in two 25-23 and 25-19.

Golf cart ordinance still the center of debate in Braidwood

The issue of golf carts on city streets returned to city leaders in Braidwood once again, after another resident of the community came to council with questions.

Christopher Wietting approached the city council during their regular meeting on Sept. 27 about the issue.

Finding a place for man’s best friend in Braidwood

The city of Braidwood is looking at the possibility of adding a new outdoor area, specifically catering to man’s best friend.

City administrator Tony Altiery said the city is gathering input from the public on the feasibility and interest in adding a dog park for local residents to play with their four-legged friends off leash.

“We’re looking to work in conjunction with the park district to do a dog park near the corner of Center and 3rd Street,” Alriery said.

Braidwood approves new excavator purchase

The city of Braidwood has added some new equipment for its public works fleet.

On Sept. 27, the members of the Braidwood City Council approved the purchase of a 2016 Hyundai Robex 55-9A excavator from Gerdes Outdoor Power, in an amount not to exceed $55,000.

“We’re also looking at a trailer, we’re just trying to get some equipment that we need that’s never been purchased,” city administrator Tony Altiery said. “That way our guys can work more efficiently, and it’s safer. It’s additional equipment, we’ve never had it.”

Wilmington 209-U set to replace HVAC at SIS

Wilmington School District 209-U is one step closer to finally getting a fix for its broken A/C at Stevens Intermediate School.

In September, the board of education approved plans to move ahead with Precision Controls, a company the district has worked with before on other operations and maintenance projects, to fix the HVAC at SIS.

Break-in at Wine Cafe in Wilmington damages video gaming terminals

The Wilmington Police Department is investigating a break-in at the Wine Cafe over the weekend.

The incident was reported to police early on Saturday, Oct. 1. The break-in took place overnight, with the burglars spending several hours inside the establishment.

“The exterior had been compromised and entry was gained through a side wall,” Police Chief Joe Mitchell said. “We are running down some leads and we will be working with the Will County State’s Attorney’s office on the investigation.”
