Rate increases and your bill

    The city’s new water and sewer rates and fees will cost you an additional $11.61 per month — at a minimum. And because the greater increases are in the base fees rather than the usage rates, residents who use the least amount of water will feel the impact of the changes the most.
    The City Council approved an ordinance changing the water and sewer rates and fees on Tuesday night. The changes have been under discussion since mid-December.
The increases
    These are the increases being approved:
    • Water meter replacement fee — 6 cents

Update: 4-3-18 The victim was identified using tattoo comparison as Michael Hollins, 42, of Joliet. An autopsy was performed Tuesday, April 3, and the final cause and manner of death will be determined following receipt of police, autopsy and toxicological reports.

Area police and fire units were called to perform a water rescue in the Des Plaines River Monday morning, but the rescue quickly turned to a recovery effort.

Coal City Intermediate School students took to the stage performing Disney’s  “Beauty & the Beast Jr.”
The March 22 musical  featuring a cast of fourth and fifth grade students consisted of three shows at the Coal City Performing Arts Center.
Coal City Intermediate School teacher and student council sponsor Jenn Ness and her cast of about 60 students began rehearsing for the show when school resumed following winter break on Jan. 9.

Every person needs help at some time in their life and when that time comes, Help for Hope is there to offer emergency and long-term assistance.
The non-profit organization was established simply to help those in need, be its basic necessities or access to long-term services.
In order to carry out its mission, Help for Hope is calling on the community to help fill the shelves with toilet paper, paper towels, shampoo, laundry soap, all purpose cleaner, men’s and women’s deodorant, bleach, and dishwashing soap.

Veterans Health Services continues outreach in Grundy County

 The Community Outreach Team from the US Department of Veterans Affairs Edward Hines VA Hospital will be in the area several times during April with information about eligibility and enrollment, immunizations, minor health screenings and medication reconciliation along with additional information about alcohol awareness.
 The Community Outreach Team is scheduled to visit Grundy County and the surrounding area on the following days in April:
• Monday, April 2, Morris American Legion Hall, 212 W Washington Street from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Briley to face Callahan in county sheriff’s race

     It’s a familiar post primary election headline, Ken Briley is moving on to the November election with the hopes of unseating the incumbent sheriff. Garnering 70 percent of the vote, Briley secured the Republican nomination for sheriff and will go up against Kevin Callahan, Grundy County’s sheriff since 2012.
    The two faced each other in the 2014 general election with Callahan earning 53.6 percent of the vote, a difference of 1,204 votes.

     As the village of Coal City enters the final month of its fiscal year, a new budget has been drafted. The upcoming financial plan points to a 23 percent reduction in expenditures.
    Village Administrator Matt Fritz reports a large potion of this planned reduction is related to one-time capital expenditures, specifically the elimination of any additional rail within the industrial project at Broadway and Reed Road.

    It’s neighbors helping neighbors, with no sign ups, no income restrictions, no names. No strings attached. If you’re in need of a meal, food is available to you 24 hours a day, seven days a week — holidays included.
    A micro pantry was installed at The Center, 35445 Washington St. in Custer Park on March 17, one of several in the area. Micro pantries are self-sufficient food pantries intended to help during the lean times between food pantry visits or paychecks.
