Coal City Police welcome new officer

Coal City’s newest police officer will report for 16 weeks of basic law enforcement training starting next week.

Kirstyn McKim was sworn into her new position during the Village Board meeting on Aug. 23. As members of the police force looked on, she was presented with badge #923 from Coal City Police Chief Chris Harseim.

The 23-year-old Wilmington resident studied criminal justice at Joliet Junior College and previously served in security for Constellation at its Dresden Generating Station.

Drilling for water

If all goes as scheduled, contractors will begin drilling a new water well for the village of Coal City within the week.

Equipment is being moved on-site this week.

The village and Coal City Fire Protection District are finalizing the terms of an easement agreement that will allow the town to place the necessary electrical components of the system within a storage garage owned by the fire district.

Something new planned for the holiday season

Something new is planned for the holiday season as the Coal City Junior Woman’s Club is considering the addition of a holiday market.

The organization has been around for 70 years and throughout that time members have hosted and participated in all types of community service projects including the village’s annual tree lighting.

This year the non-profit organization is looking to expand on that event by adding an outdoor market similar to the Christkindle Market.

Grundy Co. Land Use hosting electronic ewaste and shredding event

Grundy County Land Use Department will be hosting an electronic ewaste and shredding event on Saturday Sept. 16, 2023, at the parking lot north of the Grundy County Animal Control Facility from 8:00 AM to noon. The Grundy County Animal Control Facility is located at 310 East DuPont Road in Morris.

Fees will be applied for all TVs: $25/each for all TVs except projection. $50.00/TV Projection Size.

Wilmington continues as part of Heritage Corridor Destinations

The city of Wilmington has re-upped for another year as a member of Heritage Corridor Destinations Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The city became a member of the Heritage Corridor last year. City administrator Jeannine Smith said the investment has paid off.

Since joining Heritage Corridor, Wilmington has already been awarded two grants. The first grant, totaling roughly $250,000, was used to pay for the city’s new downtown parking lot and installation of the two electric vehicle charging stations.

Wilmington to homeowners: Keep your trees and shrubs maintained

Residents in Wilmington who don’t take care of their overgrown grass, shrubs, and trees now have less time to get into compliance before the city hands out a fine.

On Aug. 15, the members of the City Council approved an ordinance to amend the city’s regulations on the removal of “nuisance greenery” on properties in town.

Nuisance greenery is addressed in Chapter 91 of the city’s code of ordinances, which defines nuisance greenery under four categories:

• Weeds and grass in excess of eight inches in height

County work on West River Road lands Wilmington a bill

The city of Wilmington will pay nearly $350,000 for a project that city officials aren’t too keen on.

On Aug. 15, the City Council approved an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) for proposed improvements on West River Road.

The Will County Department of Transportation is reconstructing West River Road from Route 53 to Coal City Road, despite the fact that the road was recently resurfaced.

Because the project will impact the city’s sidewalks and water lines that fall in that area, the city is responsible for replacement.

Wilmington’s golf cart ordinance amended, but not yet on the books

Residents who own golf carts in the city of Wilmington will be able to legally drive those vehicles across Route 53.

But not just yet.

Earlier in August, the Wilmington City Council’s Committee of the Whole held a discussion on changing the language in the city’s ordinance on golf carts to allow them to pass over state-owned roads.

Braidwood coalition plans for anti-vaping campaign

As the Braidwood Area Healthy Community Coalition (BAHCC) waits to hear if it is the recipient of years six to 10 of a Drug Free Communities grant, the organization is working on campaigns to help reduce vaping among local teens.

During this month’s meeting of the BAHCC, which was held on Aug. 14, program Director Pete Dell’Aquila said the coalition is adding an anti-vaping campaign with the assistance of state funded communication materials that the BAHCC receives though grant funds.

Two new trustees for Custer Fire Protection District board

The Custer Fire Protection District will meet again on Aug. 23, once again with a full board.

On Aug. 16, the Custer Township Board met to appoint two people to the vacant seats on the Custer Fire Protection District (CFPD) board of trustees, as the contentious issue of whether to enter an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) with the Braidwood Fire Protection District for services still looms.
