Next step for D’Orazio, Arnie Bauer plans gets OK from Braidwood City Council

The city of Braidwood has put the stamp of approval on the next round of paperwork required to bring two car dealerships into town.

On Aug. 23, the three members of the Braidwood City Council on hand for the regular monthly meeting unanimously approved council approved an ordinance authorizing the sale of property along EZ Street.

“That will be going to Bauer & D’Orazio LLC,” city administrator Tony Altiery said.

The ordinance is part of the legal paperwork required for the city to convey those city-owned properties on EZ Street for development.

Wilmington Cross country team runs first meet

After an absence of more than four decades, cross country is up and running again at Wilmington High School.

Due to interest among students, the school has put together a team for this season.

What exactly is cross country? Cross country running consists of about three miles of racing through woods, wilderness, golf courses and more. Cross country running takes a different kind of mental strength as every race you line up knowing pain is ahead.

Park changes on the horizon at Children’s Memorial in Wilmington

An effort to increase amenities at Children’s Memorial Park in Northcrest continues to progress, thanks to donations, collaborations, and an active effort on behalf of the Wilmington Park District to create an inclusive space for residents.

Wilmington Park District Executive Director Kirsten Van Duyne said the plans to upgrade the park are still in the initial phase, but things are moving along, including plans to add a 1,000 foot U-shaped accessible asphalt walking path with a story walk around the perimeter of the park.

Soap Box Derby hits top speed in Elwood

When kids started showing up Saturday for the first ever Soap Box Derby racing in Elwood, it was obvious that a car made from old wooden soap crates and roller skating wheels wouldn’t do.

Youngsters came serious about winning, some with their own creations, others racing inside soapbox vehicles already built and donated for the event.

The Coal City High School student council is bringing back the Homecoming parade and opening participation up to community businesses.

The second annual homecoming parade will be held Friday, Sept. 30 stepping off from the intersection of South Broadway and Spring Road at 2:30 p.m.

The parade route is being reversed this year with units heading north on Broadway to Carbon Street and concluding at the Berst Center on Kankakee Street.

After months of waiting, request to raise chickens granted

After multiple meetings and months of patient waiting, a Coal City woman’s request to keep chickens in her backyard received a stamp of approval.

In the Spring, Elizabeth Street resident Dayna Maggiore approached the village about keeping chickens and it prompted the town’s Planning and Zoning Board to establish an ad-hoc committee to review the existing code that allowed poultry yards within the village limits.

However, in Maggiore’s case the setbacks prohibited her from setting up a coop without a variance from the village.

Changes coming with implementation of SAFE-T Act

On a cold winter night in January 2021 the Illinois General Assembly approved a comprehensive criminal justice bill—legislation that abolishes cash bail, expands detainee rights, and reforms police training, certification and use-of-force standards.

The Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity-Today Act-SAFE-T Act—was introduced and voted in the final days of lame duck session.

State Senator Sue Rezin said, “it was crafted while most Illinoisans slept and there was little to no public debate or review before it was passed in the very, very early morning.”

Friendly competition coming to Carbon Hill Park

Punt, Pass & Kick, one of the oldest youth sports competitions, is coming to the community in September.

Boys and girls ages 5-14 —except those 14-year-olds in high school—are invited and encouraged to participate in the upcoming competition that will find kids punting, passing and kicking a football.

Todd Cumming, of Carbon Hill, is organizing the event and has invited neighboring communities and local youth football organizations to join in.

Overnight parking ban liftd for downtown Wilmington

There are some new rules for parking when visiting downtown Wilmington.

On Aug. 16, the members of the City Council approved a change to the city’s rules on parking, eliminating the no overnight parking rule downtown and replacing it with a ban on overnight parking on Sundays only.

The change prohibits parking on the east side of N. Water Street from Baltimore Street to Chicago Street between the hours of 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Sundays, and in the west side of N. Water Street from Baltimore Street to Chicago Street between the hours of 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Sundays.
