Braidwood leaders laud City Hall staff

City leaders in Braidwood said they want to give credit where credit it doe to the workers at City Hall.

On Aug. 9, city administrator Tony Altiery took a moment out of the regular meeting of the City Council to publicly thank the staff for their hard work.

Vacated alley brings communication issues back to Braidwood City Council

A small piece of property that was literally a road to nowhere was the subject of some debate among members of the City Council earlier this month, with one commissioner continuing his argument that he is often kept in the dark when it comes to city business.

On Aug. 9, a measure came before the City Council seeking to vacate at alley at 151 Will Road, on the west side of the interstate near the I-55 and Reed Road interchange. The land is owned by David Claussen of Wilmington.

First step for Braidwood road resurfacing plans approved

The city of Braidwood is prepping for road projects around town.

On Aug. 9, city engineer Dave Weber presented the council with the city’s road resurfacing plans for the current fiscal year, which will be funded with Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) funds.

But, there’s a catch.

Weber said between a volatile market that created a higher than normal cost of asphalt and a delay in deliveries from quarries, the current effort is solely to get bids and evaluate prices. A timeframe for actual work is not something the city can put into a concrete plan just yet.

Wilmington to add reckless conduct ordinance

The city of Wilmington is expected to create a new local law to address behavior that could potentially put other people at risk of harm.

Police Chief Joe Mitchell reviewed the proposed ordinance with members of the City Council’s Committee of the Whole on Aug. 9.

The issue came about after a local business that was shutting down left the premises with some live wires still exposed.

Wilmington 209-U approves school safety plan

School is back in session.

Students in Wilmington School District 209-U kicked off the 2022-2023 school year this morning (Wednesday).

Earlier this month, members of the Board of Education approved this year’s school safety plan, in anticipation of those students making their return.

Road condition map stepping off point for Wilmington road projects

The city of Wilmington has put off regular road maintenance and repaving this year, waiting for prices on asphalt and construction costs to drop.

But, the city has made some strides when it comes to preparing for the future of cleaning up those local roads.

On Aug. 9, Public Works Director James Gretencord gave the members of the Committee of the Whole a first look at the city’s new pavement condition map, which was prepared for the council by Chamlin and Associates.

Meadow Estates residents oppose apartments

Meadow Estates residents have a lot to say about the developer’s plan to construct apartments within the residential subdivision. Their thoughts and opinions were presented to the town’s Planning and Zoning Board.

When developer Mark Scaggs started the subdivision 16 years ago he included a commercial lot in the plans. But with no potential buyers in sight, he now wants to rezone the parcel and construct apartment buildings.

Road resurfacing through Coal City, Diamond to begin

A 1.58-mile roadway resurfacing project is set to begin next week on Coal City’s busiest thoroughfare.

D Construction has been awarded a state bid for the milling and resurfacing of Route 113 [Division Street] from Lincoln Street in Coal City east to the Will County line, Will Road in Diamond.

The $1.2 million project is being funded through the state’s Rebuild Illinois program.

In addition to the resurfacing work, the project includes the installation of ADA ramps on sidewalks at various intersections along the project area.

Highway honor for late police chief

A portion of Illinois Route 113 has been named in honor of Coal City’s late police chief Dennis M. Neary.

A ceremony to recognize the designation will take place next month.

A resolution, approved last year in the Illinois Senate, establishes the portion of Route 113 [Division Street] from Carbon Hill Road east to Virginia Street as the Dennis M. Neary Memorial Highway.

Signs making this section of the roadway were installed last week by the Illinois Department of Transportation [IDOT].

Coal City seeks another rounds of housing rehab funds

In its continuing effort to assist low to moderate income homeowners, the Coal City Village Board is preparing its application for another round of Housing Rehabilitation funds.

The funds, if awarded, would provide the village with an additional $500,000 to assist 10 homeowners in covering the cost of up to $50,000 in necessary interior and exterior improvements.
