Coal City Police investigate social media post

The Coal City Police Department reports it received information today, Wednesday, Feb. 28, from administration at the Coal City Unit 1 School District that an alarming post was made on the social media app Snapchat by a juvenile.             Coal City Police want to inform residents of Coal City that there was no threat made toward the school, its faculty, or students within the district.

Plan for new fire station to be reviewed

    Residents will have the opportunity to hear the plans for a new $3 million station for the Wilmington Fire Protection District at two public hearings in March.
    The fire district designed the “First Response Building” with architect Healy Bender, but the developer of RidgePort, not the taxpayers, will foot the bill for construction.

Local support gets Nelson’s to 50

Leave your waders home: City to prohibit entering the river

    Fishermen take note — there will be no more wading off the South Island Park, no matter how good of a walleye hole is out there. In an effort to stop the tide of drownings at the Kankakee River dam at Wilmington and limit local liability, city officials are planning to prohibit anyone from entering the water from the city park.
    The City Council’s License and Ordinance Committee reviewed a draft ordinance amendment this month that will create an exclusion zone on the west bank of the South Island Park, from above the dam to Baltimore Street.

Seniors set for final stage show at CCHS

With just one week till opening night of “Les Miserables,” seniors Koren Frideres and Savannah Magee  are preparing for their final stage productions at Coal City High School.
Both girls have been involved in other high school shows.
Magee is more comfortable working backstage. She helped tech the school’s fall plays, such as “Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” she was also behind the curtain for “Little Shop of Horrors” in 2016.

Select Coal City

     Marketing the community is nothing new to the village of Coal City. Town leaders have promoted the town during trade shows, conferences and developer meetings.
    But this summer they will take a new approach by inviting investors into the community to check out all the town has to offer.
    The Village Board has given its approval to become a SelectChicago showcase community with the hope that investors will select Coal City.
    SelectChicago is a program designed to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) to the area.

Clerk’s conference attendance questioned

    Coal City’s Village Clerk Pam Noffsinger is interested in attending the International Institute of Municipal Clerks annual conference, but it all comes down to money.
    Noffsinger has already registered for the conference, but is seeking a grant to cover the $650 fee. The only thing she’s asking the village to pick up is the cost of accomodations at about $927 for the four-day training in Norfolk, VA.
    The clerk let the board know she’d cover the remaining costs if allowed to attend the conference set for May 20 to 23.

Polling places changes throughout Grundy County

Grundy County Clerk, Kay Olson, would like to make voters aware of the consolidation of several precincts in the County, and the polling place changes that have occurred.
Braceville 01 and Braceville 03 polling places have been changed, with these voters now voting along with Braceville 04, at the Coal City Lions Hall, located at 460 S. Illinois St., Coal City.
Also, the Saratoga 02 and Saratoga 05 precincts have been consolidated. Voters in both precincts will now vote at the Saratoga Township Hall, located at 9080 N. Rt. 47, Morris.

Reverse angle parking starts next week

     Village of Coal City officials say reverse angle parking is as simple as 1-2-3—signal, stop and reverse, yet not everyone is convinced it’s the way to go.
    A proposal to establish reverse angle parking along South Broadway is part of a planned reconstruction of the roadway between Division Street and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail crossing.
    To achieve its goal of green space, bicycle lanes and a center turn lane, an ad-hoc committee and town leaders are looking at parking concepts that include reverse angle and parallel.

Kankakee Street to be closed for over three months

    North Kankakee Street will close at the Union Pacific Railroad tracks for more than three months for big changes resulting from the state’s high speed rail project.
    The Illinois Department of Transportation and Union Pacific Railroad are adding a second track from Joliet to Braceville to improve the movement of freight and high speed passenger trains.
