Snow, snow and more in the forecast

     Snow blowers were humming and shovels scrapping the ground Tuesday morning as area residents cleared driveways from the latest round of snow.
    And it looks the weather’s not done yet as snow is expected to fall on three of the next four days.
    A winter storm system passed through the area Monday evening dumping 3.3 inches of snow on Coal City, Diamond and Carbon Hill.

First and last high school musical for “Les Miserables” stars

This week’s installment of Cast Chats for Coal City High School’s upcoming production of “Les Miserables,” features Nick Berta and Stephen Byers.
Berta, a senior, has been cast as Inspector Javert, who is the main antagonist of the show. Not only is Javert the biggest enemy of Jean Valjean, but he also poses as a threat to the revolutionaries.

Habitat to dedicate Hill Family home

      Glen and Beth Hill will take ownership of their new home this weekend.
    Along with their teenage children — Robert and Samantha — the couple partnered with Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity on the construction of their home in Coal City.
    It’s been nine months since the Hill family pierced the ground with the tips of golden shovels to mark the start of construction, and this week the waiting will come to an end as they accept the keys to the home at 655 E. Fourth St.

    Three urban schools closed in January for a good disinfecting to disrupt the spread of influenza; but local educational institutions aren’t seeing the absences that would require such a cleanup.
    The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported Friday that as of Jan. 27, hospitalizations for influenza were the highest seen, even higher than in 2014-15, the previous high season, and that flu activity continues to increase, resulting in crowded hospitals and spot shortages of antiviral medications and rapid influenza tests.

Veterans outreach, support group moves in

    It’s a long haul to go to Chicago for services, so a Chicago area veterans support organization is bringing outreach services down here.
    K9s for Veterans will provide veterans services and train service dogs at The Center, the area community center in Custer Park owned and operated by the Godley Public Water District. The Center’s tenants include Grief Anonymous, the Braidwood Area Coalition for a Healthy Community and TEACH Outdoors, an organization that introduces youngsters to traditional activities such as fishing, camping and hunting.

Coalition planning second post prom event

    The pressure is on — after putting on such a successful post prom last year, the Wilmington Coalition for a Healthy Community is under the gun to host an even bigger and better event this year.
    Ninety high school students attended the post prom in 2017, which was about half the number of students who attended the prom. Coalition members think that for a first event, 50 percent was a very good participation rate.

Gatto remembered by City Council

Members of the Braidwood City Council took a moment away from city government to honor a local police officer who passed away earlier this month.

On Jan. 23, the council members observed a moment of silence in honor of Officer Michael “Mike” Gatto.

Gatto passed away on Jan. 12.

Mayor Jim Vehrs said Gatto was a dedicated officer, spending a quarter century patrolling the streets of Braidwood.

Hotel project inches closer to reality

City leaders in Braidwood over the past several administrations have been seeking ways to attract builders to town and to boost the city’s interstate junctions with the addition of permanent businesses.

But this year, the city appears closer than ever to having that development become a reality, with a new proposal for a hotel on the table.

On Jan. 23, local builder Tony Altiery and his business partner, attorney Frank Meents, made a brief presentation to the members of the City Council.

City declares residential property a nuisance

Neighbors along south Division Street have spent the past several years complaining to City Hall about an unkempt home in their block. After what city officials says is months of trying to work with the homeowner, city leaders have taken a major step to try to clean up the area

On Jan. 23, the council approved an ordinance declaring the home at 402 S. Division St. a public nuisance.

According to the Will County Supervision of Assessments website, the property belongs to Carl and Mary Lu Krueger.
