Voter registration now open for General Primary Election

Grundy County Clerk, Kay Olson, reminds voters that the deadline to register to vote  for the March 20 General Primary Election is Tuesday, Feb. 20.
“If voters have moved or changed their name, they will need to update their voter registration. We rely on information from the Secretary of State and other state agencies for the transfer of updated information, but this information does not always make it to our office in a timely manner,” Olson said.

Kernc working on Diamond’s to do list

     A white board hangs on the wall across from Terry Kernc’s desk, a constant reminder of the progress taking place and the projects she strives to complete.
    In her third term as Diamond’s mayor, Kernc has a lot of successful initiatives behind her, from establishing an enterprise zone to the extensive widening of Route 113. But as she enters a new year there are still a number of projects on her to do list.

Vehicle sticker program ended

Residents of Braidwood will get a break in 2018, thanks to a move by members of the city council to dissolve the program that once required residents to come to City Hall and register their vehicles.

On Dec. 21, the City Council approved an amendment to the city code, eliminating the requirement for residents to purchase city stickers for their vehicles.

Contract deal reached with police sergeants

Braidwood’s police sergeants will start the new year under a new contract.

On Dec. 21, members of the city council approved a new collective bargaining agreement between the Metropolitan Alliance of Police, the Braidwood Police Sergeant Chapter 190 and the city.

Making the school a greener place to be

Helping the school to become a ‘greener’ place to b - this is the mission statement for the Reed-Custer High School Recycling Club.

The Recycling Club was formed in 2011 with the help of a small group of dedicated students. Club members volunteer their time emptying the recycling bins in the hallways and sorting out the aluminum cans.

The club has been involved in reducing the use polystyrene products in the cafeteria since the #6 PS plastic can't be recycled and is found to be harmful to the environment.

    They shiver when they hear those three little words — water main break.
    The city crew had a big one last week, a break in a 6-inch line providing service to Berkot’s Super Foods and the former Ben Franklin store. It was reported at 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4, and by the time city workers found a valve to isolate the section that burst, the yards on the south side of Baltimore were flooded halfway to Chestnut Street, and the used car lot’s merchandise was in danger of being frozen in.

Police Officer Castro sworn in

    Mayor Roy Strong administered the oath of office to one new full-time and two part-time officers of the Wilmington Police Department last week.
    Luis Castro Jr. is the department’s newest full-time officer. He spent six years in the Army Reserves. Returning to the states after an overseas tour of duty, a friend gave him a tip about a job in Chicago, working security in a high-rise downtown.

    The council is paying attention to big rigs after hearing complaints from residents who aren’t happy to be breathing truck exhaust, or being startled from their slumber at the sound of engine braking.

Fifth grade cocoa sales support local, world initatives

Students in Jennifer Rink’s fifth grade class sold more than 1,600 cups of hot chocolate in the days leading up to the school’s winter break. The funds collected went to support local families in need, pediatric cancer research and to purchase a cow, a pig and two flocks of chickens to create sustainable food sources for individuals in third world countries.
