I-8 Conference names best in baseball, softball

    The Interstate Eight conference has named seven softball players to the All Conference team.
    Coal City has three players honored including Payton Smith, Leslie Youskevtch and Madison Emerson.
    Smith was a pitcher for the Lady Coalers compiling 130 innings over a long season while maintaining a 2.04 ERA and striking out 130 batters.

Camp reveals future of Lady Comets’ basketball

    Reed-Custer High School hosted a middle school girls basketball camp on Monday with coach  Nick Klein stressing one thing beyond the fundamentals. Defense!
    “Teach them a great defensive approach because defense gives us a chance to win every night we go out there. You can shoot some shots and that is a little inconsistent, defense is always there and you can always rely on a good D,” said Klein.
    It was a camp where players were focused on every word Klein said.

Weaver advances to state track finals, places 11th

    Reed-Custer boys tracksters competed in state track meet in Charleston, IL  Thursday having one advance to the finals and having others finishing just seconds away.
    Zach Weaver qualified in the long jump event, needing (21’) and earning (21’2”) placing 6th in his preliminary flight on Thursday. He returned Saturday for the finals when the Comet senior placed 11th overall with a distance of 21’2”. First place went to Tate Walcott of Colfax who had a leap of 24-00.25.

Christian medals in two state events

On Saturday, Reed-Custer sophomore Jaden Christian medaled in two events during the IHSA Girls Track & Field State finals held in Charleston, IL.
    Christian placed fourth in the triple jump after finishing the preliminaries third in her flight with a distance of 37-00.05. She matched that distance in the final round to end up fourth behind the first place distance of 38-00-00 set by Danielle Teats (Jr.) from Orion.

Lady Comets romp the Lions to gear up for Regional

    Reed-Custer’s softball team hosted the Lady Lions Friday, coming out on top 5-0 thanks to a no hit effort from Ruth Fetzner and Antoinette Hill.
    The Lions were unable to come up with any kind of offense as Fetzner and Hill were phenomenal.
    The Lady Comets scored two runs in the second inning to jump out in front early.
    An RBI single off the bat of Emily Wolf plated Fetzner who roped a single to lead off the inning and Faletti who reached on an error.

Tough rivalry shutout

    On Thursday night, Reed-Custer hosted the Lady Coalers during their senior night in front of the stands for the football field.
    But things didn’t quite go as planned  as the visitors played the spoilers, beating the Lady Comets 5-0.
    Coal City was able to get five goals on Gabi Perez but she did save 19 goals during the game.
    The Lady Comets were unable to help her out surrendering a loss to their rivals in a one sided game.
    The Reed-Custer Lady Comets will get ready to host the IHSA regionals on Friday.

Lady Comets stay hot, leading conference

The Reed-Custer Lady Comets traveled to Coal City and ended up pulling out a 5-4 win in extra innings.            The Lady Comets (12-4) got the ball rolling scoring one in the opening inning to take the lead.                 Kelsi Dillon doubled to lead off the ballgame. Haley Mazon singled to right advancing Dillon to third and then a double steal attempt ended up scoring Dillon from third before Mazon was nabbed at second.

Reed-Custer’s Grace Colclasure had a stellar game Monday, driving in five runs to lift the Lady Comets to a 12-3 victory over Streator.    

RCMS bowlers place 8th at state, girls finish 23rd

The Reed-Custer Middle School boys and girls bowling teams faced a fun and exciting weekend during the State Bowling Tournament at Town and Country Lanes in Joliet.
    “The girls did an amazing job, but it was a tough crowd, and they weren’t able to move on to the second day,” said head coach Robert Dillon.
    The Lady Panthers finished in 23rd overall, as the individuals also competed in a 152 bowler pool.
    Elizabeth Wietting secured 82nd, Kayley Kohler earned 91st, Eva Mudro picked up 112th, and Julia Janopoulos finished 122nd.

Long joins FPN news staff

Shawn Long, of Wilmington, has joined the Free Press Newspapers to help cover high school sports.
    He is a graduate of Illinois State University where he majored in broadcast journalism and was a television sports reporter on the campus news station, TV-10 News.
    Long graduated from Wilmington High School in 2011, and went on to attend Joliet Junior College, where he originally wanted to be an architect. He took a couple of journalism classes and it was a fit.
