Lady Comets put the hit on Serena at all three levels

    The Comet volleyball team spiked their way past  Serena in all three levels as everything was working on Thursday night, with varsity winning two out of three sets,  26-24, 7-25 and 25-18.
    “The stars aligned for us,” said R-C coach Kelly Van Duyne. “We took all three levels and had a great night overall. I am so proud of my girls at all levels.”
    Defense was the name of the game for the varsity girls.

Comets pour it on Chicago Brooks after rain delay

    The Reed-Custer football team made a statement at home Friday after a Week 1 loss on the road. They manhandled Chicago Brooks 46-12.
    “It’s been a while for us,” said R-C coach Gavin Johnston. “Being at a .500 record, I am really excited for the kids and the staff. We had that huge rain delay and still so many people in the stands. The community was waiting for it. It feels pretty good.”
    Players and fans had to wait 90 minutes for the weather to break. Monsoon-like conditions flooded the  field, followed by lightning.

Reed-Custer prepares for second unknown, this time at home

    The Reed-Custer football team faced an unknown opponent in the season opener.
    This week, the unknown continues as they gear up to face Chicago Brooks, a team they have not played before.
    “Chicago Brooks is coming to us for our first home game,” said Comet coach Gavin Johnston. “They have a pretty good quarterback and they pose some different threats athleticism-wise and they have a lot of speed so it will be a big test, but I think our players will be ready coming off that first test.”

Lady Comet hitters bounce back

    Reed-Custer varsity girls bounced right back from that loss to G-SW, taking both sets over the Lady Trojans on Thursday night, 25-11 and 25-22.
    Maddi Tiangco led the Lady Comets on the offensive end, with three kills and five aces.
    The libero, Alexa Cieslak had three kills and four aces. The middle blocker Maggie Meyr also contributed with an ace and three kills.
    On the defensive end, they were tough as Cieslak led in digs with 12, Tiango had 11 and Meyr had four.

Comet kickers bounce back from blowout

The Reed-Custer soccer team righted the Comet ship Thursday, beating Sandwich 4-1 in conference play.
    “This is the way we needed to start our conference slate,” said RCHS coach Andy Gleixner. “We played hard all around. I am really impressed with young guys like Eli and Braxton and our seniors stepped up big as well.”
    The Comets outscored Sandwich in the first half, scoring two goals to the Indians’ one, making the half-time score 2-1, giving the Comets the momentum going into the second half.

Wildcats win, Coalers and Comets battle hard

Friday night football brought one victory and a pair of losses for three area teams.

Wilmington scored 12 unanswered points in the final quarter to win 39-20 at Manteno; Coal City gave powerhouse Morris a scare until the very end losing 21-7; and Reed-Custer was only one touchdown away in the third quarter before falling to Fieldcrest 34-20.

Comet golfers get swinging

    On Wednesday, the Reed-Custer golf team played their first match of the season, unable to shake off Streator and Seneca.
    The Comet golfers (208) came in third behind  Streator (171), then Seneca (181).
    The top golfers for the Comets were freshman Aiden Lantka who shot a 51 and senior Joe Saltzman who carded a 52.
    The Comets hit the road Tuesday, traveling to Blackberry Oaks Golf Course in Bristol, IL, squaring up against Manteno and Lisle.

Varsity Panther softball stays undefeated

    The varsity Panther softball team is on a roll, knotching eight in a row with a recent 1-0 victory over Channahon’s “A” team, thanks to Grace Moyer in the circle.
    Moyer had an impeccable game in the circle, pitching a shutout through seven full innings of work while punching out 18 batters.
    The Panthers gave her the run support she needed in the fifth inning on an RBI double off the bat of Grace Hanson, plating Halie LaGrange.

New coach, new game plan for the Comets

    Forget about last season’s 2-7 record and bottom finish in the conference standings, the Reed-Custer varsity football team has wiped the slate clean with a new outlook under a new coach.
    Gavin Johnston hopes to spark the Comets as the new coach, replacing Mark Wolf who stepped down after four years.

All in Da Swing wins Brimetime tournament

    The North Island Park in Wilmington hosted a men’s softball tournament featuring eight teams from around the area.
    The tournament kicked off on Friday at 7 p.m. where three games were played, concluding at 11 p.m.
    The semi finals and championship games were played on Saturday as the Wilmington team, All in Da Swing, played Jason’t Electrical in the semi finals and finals, beating them both times to win the championship.
