Lady Comets down Serena for sixth straight win

    On Tuesday night, the Reed-Custer girls basketball team kept up their perfect run going by taking down Serena, 46-27.
    The Lady Comets used their height advantage to its fullest to get their sixth straight win since the season started.
    The Lady Comets were  leading 23-7 at half and they came out firing, sinking 18 points in the third to coast to victory.
    The defense held the Serena girls to just eight points in the third quarter and at that point, Reed-Custer had a commanding 41-15 lead.

Comets hoops finish off Seneca Tournament with two wins

    The Comet hoops team ended the Seneca Tournament, cruising to an 11-point victory over Mendota, 62-51, thanks to double-doubles from Gage Stamm and Jacob Heisner.
    Stamm tallied 20 points while collecting 13 rebounds to earn his first double-double of the season. He also hit one of his shots from behind the arc, made all but one of his free throws and hit on six of his tosses from the floor.

    Reed-Custer senior Antoinette Hill will not have to change school colors now that she has committed to playing softball for Purdue University where gold and black reign.
    “I started playing softball when I was nine years old,” said the Lady Comet ace. “I played for the BBSA and as the season went on, we were destroying teams so some parents came over to me and said I should play travel ball. It was at a higher level so it made me better. I had to work harder at it and then I just got better at it as the years went on.”

Comets’ hoops team falls to Somonauk to begin the Seneca Tournament

    The Reed-Custer Comet basketball team opened their season in the Seneca Tournament losing 52-35 to first round opponent Somonauk.
    Somonauk scored 13 points to take a 13-8 lead. They compounded that by scoring 18 in the second quarter to take a 31-20 lead heading into the break.
    The Somonauk boys scored double digits the rest of the way and held the Comet boys to just 15 total points to seal the win.
    Reed-Custer shot 30 percent from the floor, made two three-pointers and shot 41 percent from the line.

Two area teams advance to the state finals

    It’s down to just two teams in each class as the State football finals will be played starting Friday in Champaign.
Class 1A
    Six seeded Forreston(10-2) pulled the upset against Lena Winslow #4, 34-28  and Camp Point #2 did the same to top seeded Argenta, 35-22. The two will meet up in the early game on Friday, set for 10 a.m.

Lady Comets keep the Cardinals grounded

    The Lady Comet basketball team came out swinging Monday in their Comet Classic, having a great defensive effort against St. Anne in a 59-13 dominating win.
    Reed-Custer (1-0) jumped out to an 18-0 lead in the first quarter, not giving the offense of St. Anne any chances.

Comets change their style with taller squad

    The Comet basketball team may not be the run-and-gun team of the past, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be any less exciting to watch.
    Head coach Mark Porter has been at the helm for 22 years and he is coming off an 11-17 season, including a loss to Seneca in the Regional semifinal. He will be assisted by Tyler Schoonover, Matt Hines and Dalton Kinzler who hope to turn this season into a success with a talented group.

Herscher is the only I-8 team that remains

Three area teams—one a member of the Interstate Eight Conference—have reached the semi-final round of the football playoffs. Herscher, Joliet Catholic and Bishop McNamara - Kankakee survived the quarterfinal round.
Class 3A
    Herscher, seeded 15th, upset Monmouth (Mt. Roseville) #6, 24-20. They will play Byron #1 in the semifinal. Byron (12-0) upended the other I-8 team, Lisle #4, 49-7.

Three Interstate Eight schools advance to quarterfinals

    Three undefeated teams fell by way of the upset in the second round of the state football playoffs.  Princeville #1, Ottawa Marquette #2 and Milledgeville #3 were eliminated this week.
    Princeville (10-0) was shutout by 9th seed Aurora Christian, 41-0. Ottawa Marquette took their game down to the wire with Dakota before losing by a two point conversion. Dakota (8-3) will play Forreston #6 ,who upset Milledgeville 10-0 by the way of a two-point conversion as well.
