Conferences will be eliminated from football

Just when the break up of the Interstate Eight Conference has been hashed out, now it looks like it wasn’t needed when it comes to football as the Illinois High School Association announces it is doing away with conferences.
High schools across the state voted 324 to 307 to move away from a conference system to a district system.
Football coaches from Coal City, Wilmington and Reed-Custer are still trying to figure out exactly what the new vote will mean.
The first thing that they need to do is wait.

Comets comeback features 22-4 run

    The Reed-Custer boys basketball team went on a 22-4 run Friday night to rally against Streator and pull off a 55-50 victory.
    The Comets (4-5, 2-3 conference)  were down, 16-6 after one quarter of play but their 22-point second quarter slingshot them back into the lead, 28-20 after their defense held the Bulldogs to just two layups.
    The Comets were outscored in the third quarter, 16-10 as the Bulldogs were trying to mount a comeback but the Comets came back in the fourth, putting up 17 to Streator’s 14.

Lady Comets fall to Seneca, snap five-game win streak

    The Reed-Custer girls couldn’t keep their win streak going Monday, falling to Seneca, 53-29. Seneca’s defense was impressive during the first half while the Lady Comets stalled.
    The Lady Comets (11-3,  3-2 conference) were held to just 12 points in the first half while the Lady Irish put up 31 to take a 31-12 lead.
    Reed-Custer was out-scored 13-12 in the third to face a 20-point deficit heading into the final frame.

Lady Comets edge the Lions, win third straight

    The Lady Comet hoopsters surprised the Interstate Eight by upsetting Lisle who had only one loss in nine games, 50-46. A big second half helped to  propel Reed-Custer to their third straight win.
    “They are now 8-2 so that is a tough team,” said RC coach Nick Klein. “We knew this would be a physical game and it was. I thought we made a couple of mistakes but we were able to overcome them against a good team.”

Comets show life too late against Lisle

    The Comet boys basketball team hit their stride in the second half Friday but the damage was already done against an athletic Lisle team, suffering a 47-36 loss.
    “I thought we didn’t compete in the first half,” said RC coach Mark Porter. “We just stood there and let them jab us right in the mouth.”
    The visiting Lions built a 25-13 lead at the half, most of them just before the break when they stole the game’s momentum.

Reed-Custer matmen place five in CC F/S invite

    The Reed-Custer fresh/soph wrestlers competed in the Coal City F/S Invitational, having five place.
    Ethan Godar placed second at 182 with a 1-1 record. Two byes sent him to the semifinal round, where he would pin Plano’s Moez Aly in 1:48 to advance him to the championship round. Minooka’s Sean Dance took a decision over Godar in the championship match to send him home with second place.

    The Reed-Custer boys basketball team fell to Plano 50-30 on Friday as the Reapers pulled away in the third quarter and never looked back.
    It was neck-and-neck ballgame in the first half with Plano clinging to a one- point lead.
    Plano came out after the break to go on a 17-7 run to take a 39-28 lead.
    Reed-Custer (2-4 overall) tried to mount a comeback but the Plano defense held steadfast, allowing just a lay-up to the Comets while scoring another double digit tally to put the proverbial nail in the coffin.

Lady Comets bounce back against Peotone

    The Reed-Custer girls basketball team uprighted themselves after losing two straight to conferences opponents by beating Peotone 45-36, Monday.
    After scoring nine points in the first quarter to get things started, the Lady Comets (7-2, 1-2 conference ) put up 14 points, outscoring the Blue Devils 14-9 in the second quarter to take a 23-13 halftime lead.
    They weren’t done yet. They matched Peotone in the third quarter, scoring eight points to keep the 10 point lead.

JCA among those with an underdog win

    The IHSA state football champions have been crowned. Among the eight teams to win Friday and Saturday in Champaign is Joliet Catholic Academy who entered the playoffs with the weakest record of 5-4.
    Here is a breakdown of each of the class champions.

    In the small division, Forreston (12-2), the number six seed, upset two-seeded Camp Point Central (12-2), 44-6, thanks to a huge ground attack. Forreston ran the ball 59 times for 405 and five touchdowns.
